Tinkus

Tinku

"Tinkus" is a QUECHUA word that means "encounter". It is a stylized dance with its origins in the festivities and religious celebrations of the communities of Norte Potosi, Bolivia. The dance is acrobatic and energetic and it celebrates the relationship with the mother earth the "PACHAMAMA". Originally this dance was performed using the traditional string instrument of Bolivia the CHARANGO.

The TINKU ritual of Northern Potosi is a millennial tradition. It is a contest wherein the blood that is spilled is a sacrifice to the mother earth the PACHAMAMA. Although it seems to be a violent activity it is not an aggressive or malicious activity. It is a rite which resolves conflicts, establishes hegemony and through which various communities gather together in celebration.
